As new technology comes available,
standards must be updated to accommodate the new technologies. One of the most
heavily used standards is the IEEE43 standard. A new revision to that standard
has been published and is known as IEEE43-2013. There are a couple of major
changes to the standard incorporating new technologies. One of these changes is
the addition of Insulation Resistance Profiling (IRP) in Annex D of the new
revision IEEE43-2013. As many of you know, the IRP provides a graphical
representation of the insulation resistance over a given time period (typically
ten minutes). Through a subjective analysis of this graphical representation,
you may be able to obtain additional information as to the condition of the
insulation system especially when the insulation resistance exceeds 5000
Megohms. This has been made possible through the advancement in higher
resolution metering capabilities and very low ripple power supplies combined
with discreet sampling at five second intervals during the ten minute test.
